Oak Alley Plantation

In March 2008 – after completing the first draft of my Townsend Brown biography, I took some time off and drove the length of the Natchez Trace, from Nashville to Natchez, Mississippi, and then continued down The Great River Road to New Orleans. Oak Alley is one of the stately antebellum homes still standing along that River Road, so named for the parallel rows of 200+ year old oaks that line the walkway to the entrance.

I saw another photo of Oak Alley on Instagram and decided to post one of mine as well.

David Hume’s Golden Toe

David Hume is regarded as one of the principal authors of the Scottish Enlightenment.

This statue is one of the most prominent fixtures along Edinburgh’s Royal Mile, the cobblestone street that winds from Hollyrood Park to Edinburgh Castle, thru the heart of the “Old City.”

Visitors rub the big toe of the old sage’s foot, so that over the years the green bronze patina has been rubbed away to reveal one big, shiny toe.

Kilchurn Castle…

…is one of the three most-photographed medieval structures in all of Scotland. The others are Eilean Donan (maybe the most photographed castle in all of the UK), which we went by in the fall of 2012 on or way to the Isle of Skye, and Castle Stalker, which we… well, we missed it, even though we were standing on a vantage point about 100 yards away from where we would have seen it.

Kilchurn (it’s Scottish, so it’s pronounced “kil-hoon”) was built in about 1450 by Sir Colin Campbell, first Lord of Glenorchy, on a rocky peninsula at the northeastern end of Loch Awe, in Argyll and Bute, Scotland. We passed it on our last day in Argyll, as we headed back to Edinburgh for the last two days of our tour of Scotland.

And, yeah, we wanna go back…

Kilchurn Castle is a ruined 15th and 17th century structure on a rocky peninsula at the northeastern end of Loch Awe, in Argyll and Bute, Scotland.
