The Night Stair

Once there was a stairwell here, which the monks of the Melrose Abbey would descend every morning from their dormitory behind the doorway for their morning prayers. Then they would return to the dormitory to get the rest of their night’s sleep. No telling where those stones are now…in the wall of somebody’s stately home, perhaps…

The Night Stair 140530Since yesterday’s post was so well received, here’s another from the “Portals Of Stone” series – Melrose Abbey in @ScotBorders region. The monks lived in a dormitory behind the upper doorway, and descended the now extinct stairs at 2AM every day for morning prayers.
The GPS Coordinates are 55.5980° N, 2.7310° W since Instagram will only let me tag “nearby” locations, and I’m not there now…. <*sigh*> more at http://ift.tt/1koYz4J

Take Me Out To The Ballgame

Finally made it out to Greer Stadium for a Sounds game… This little kid on top of the dugout led the crowd in the seventh-inning-stretch rendition of “Take Me Out To The Ballgame”

Rosslyn In The Stars – The Instagram Version

rosslyn
So maybe I mentioned that I’m throwing a lot of my photos in a “frame” and posting them to Instagram, to see what sort of Legion of Followers I can find there. Last week I posted this version of “Rosslyn In The Stars” – the Portals Of Stone of a sunrise/exterior photo of this 15th century chapel a few miles south of Edinburgh which was the location of the final scene in the book and movie “The DaVinci Code.”

#GoT Humor

I saw this on Instagram yesterday and had to share it with my network. I don’t think this is the real George R. R. Martin, but can’t say for sure. You have to be familiar with the last two seasons of the show to get the joke.

#Scotland: The Writers Museum / Edinburgh

We have one of those digital photo frames on the counter in our kitchen. It’s loaded with all the photos from our trip to Scotland in October, 2012. Ann turned it on over the weekend, and I kept seeing this image. It was shot through a window at The Writers Museum on the Royal Mile in Edinburgh, Scotland (which may be my favorite place in the world). There is probably a name for this effect, with the circular lens in the middle of the pane and the geometric distortions all around it, but I can’t think of it at the moment.

Three Reasons

In response to a question posed recently at a social occasion, I offered this:

1. There was no coherent story.

2. My “inside sources” proved to be inconsistent and unreliable.

3. My principal “collaborator” proved to be bat-shit crazy.

And that’s all I have to say about that. .

#Nashville: Bobbie’s Dairy Dip

We mostly knocked around the house and worked in the yard/gardens (well, Ann did, mostly) over the Memorial Day Weekend, but Monday we got out and went for a drive in the country (oh, how I missed my convertible…). We went southwest from Pegram, into a bucolic area of Williamson County called “Fernvale,” through Leiper’s Fork and then into Franklin for an early dinner of Hot Chicken and cornbread at Gray’s On Main. Then we took the long scenic route up Old Hillsboro Road back into town to top the evening off with a stop at Bobbie’s Dairy Dip, our favorite soft ice cream stand near Sylvan Park.

#Scotland: Urquhart Castle / Loch Ness

There is a lot more to the Loch Ness than the legends of some elusive sea monster hiding in her depths. It is the largest lake in Scotland, occupying a tectonic rift between the two halves of the Scottish Highlands. The loch lies just south of the historic city of Inverness, with dramatic mountains all around.
In the middle of western shore of the loch stands the ruin of Urquhart (pronounced “urkit” castle, scene of countless clashes between Highland clans from the 12th to the 17th centuries. Given its location on the famous Loch Ness, Urguhart Castle is one of the most popular destinations in the country.
The day we went to Urquhart we actuall hired a three-wheeled motorcycle with a driver/guide to squire us from our castle hotel around the loch. Yes, that whole leg of the trip was our splurge, and it was a blast. More photos here.

#Scotland: The Queraing / Isle of Skye

This is “The Queraing” – a unique geological formation at the northern end of the Isle of Skye in the Scottish Highlands.
I have been making a concerted effort over the past week or so to get some of my photos noticed on Instagram and build my ‘follow’ing there. So I’ve been downloading files from my Zenfolio Galleries on to my iPhone, doing the Instragram filter/framing thing, and then gathering #tags and copy/pasting the from Notes into the post before doing the share thing.
The effort has gathered a few new followers, and I’ve learned a few things about the inner workings of Instagram along the way. I’ll share some of that info in a future post (like when I’m sure I know what I’m talking about).
